Alternatives
F5Bot alternative: when free alerts are enough, and when to use Conversee
If you want an email when a keyword shows up on Reddit, Hacker News, or Lobsters, F5Bot does that job well, and its free plan costs nothing. Use it.
Conversee is a different tool. It reads public conversations across Reddit, LinkedIn, X, Facebook, TikTok, Stack Overflow, and GitHub Discussions. It judges whether each one shows buying intent for your business, and it recommends what to do next: Act, Observe, or Skip, with the reason.
Conversee isn't free, and it isn't a drop-in replacement for F5Bot. This page helps you decide which tool fits the job you have.
What F5Bot does well
F5Bot has run since 2017, and it does one thing reliably: it tells you when your words appear. It checks Reddit, Hacker News, and Lobsters every few minutes and emails you when a keyword shows up in a post title, a link, or a comment.
The free plan is for personal use. As of October 2026, it includes:
- Up to 5 keywords, with up to 10 alerts per keyword and 20 alerts per day.
- Email delivery within about 2 hours of a match.
- 7 days of match history.
Paid plans add more alerts, filters by subreddit and excluded words and full post text. Higher tiers add Slack and Discord, RSS and JSON feeds, an API, and AI filtering that matches by meaning instead of exact words. Check the F5Bot plans page for current details.
If you want to know when someone mentions your brand, your domain, or your open-source project, F5Bot is a strong default. It's hard to beat free for that job.
Where keyword alerts stop
An alert tells you where a word appeared. It doesn't tell you what to do about it. That gap matters most when you use alerts to find buyers instead of brand mentions.
Buyers rarely name your product. They describe a problem: "our current setup is a mess," or "what is everyone using for this?" Problem phrases match far more posts than brand names do. Most of those posts are jokes, rants, homework, or people selling the same thing you sell.
With keyword alerts, you still do the judging yourself:
- Is this person looking to buy, or just venting?
- Does your product fit what they asked for?
- Is the thread still worth joining, or is it days old?
- What would you say that helps, without sounding like an ad?
F5Bot's paid AI filtering narrows matches by meaning, which helps. It still answers "is this a match?" and leaves "should I act, and how?" to you. On the free plan, the daily caps and the delay of up to 2 hours also make broad problem phrases hard to track.
How Conversee is different
Conversee starts from your business, not from a keyword list. You give it your website, and it builds a business profile: what you sell, who buys it, and the problems you solve. It then reads public conversations and grades each one against that profile.
Every conversation it surfaces gets one of three recommendations, with a short reason:
- Act. The person shows clear buying intent and your product fits. Join the conversation.
- Observe. The fit is there, but a pitch would be early. Ask a question or give a useful answer, and watch the thread for others with the same need.
- Skip. Not worth your time, and the reason says why, for example self-promotion or off-topic.
For conversations worth joining, Conversee drafts a reply in the tone of the community and the voice of your team. You read it, edit it, and decide whether to post. Conversee never logs into or posts from your accounts.
Conversee also watches for people comparing tools or unhappy with a competitor you name.
Two honest trade-offs:
- Conversee re-scans on a schedule of several hours, depending on your plan. If you need to know within minutes, F5Bot's paid plans are faster.
- Conversee doesn't cover Hacker News or Lobsters. If those communities are where your buyers talk, F5Bot covers them and Conversee doesn't.

Which one should you use?
F5Bot is enough when
- You mainly track your brand, domain, product name, or open-source repo.
- Hacker News or Lobsters matters to you.
- You want alerts within minutes.
- You have time to read each match and decide what to do.
- Your budget is zero.
Conversee fits when
- You want buyers, not mentions, and buyers describe problems instead of naming you.
- Your buyers talk on LinkedIn, X, Facebook, or TikTok, not only Reddit.
- You get more matches than you can read, and you want them ranked by intent.
- You want a recommended next step and a reply draft for each conversation worth joining.
- Someone on your team will post replies in their own voice.
You can also run both: F5Bot for brand mentions on Hacker News, and Conversee for finding buyers.
Other F5Bot alternatives

We plan to publish fuller comparisons with Octolens and other tools on this site.
